Dr. Luis María Argaña International Airport serves Mariscal Estigarribia, a remote outpost in the Boquerón Department of the Paraguayan Chaco, about 520 kilometres northwest of Asunción. Paraguayan military engineers built the airfield between 1977 and 1986 as part of a planned free-trade zone meant to open the northern Chaco to development. The airport takes its name from Luis María Argaña, a former vice president of Paraguay assassinated in 1999.

The single runway stretches 3,500 metres, the longest paved runway in the country and long enough for wide-body aircraft. Paraguay's Dirección Nacional de Aeronáutica Civil owns the facility, and the Paraguayan Air Force operates it alongside a military base on the same site. A single passenger terminal handles civil traffic, with a public waiting area, boarding zones and administrative offices.

No airline currently flies scheduled passenger service to Mariscal Estigarribia; operations centre on general aviation, military training and charter flights. Paraguayan authorities have studied upgrades to the airport, and the carrier Paranair has explored certifying a route to Asunción, though no commercial service has begun.
