Kikori Airport guide

Kikori Airport serves the town of Kikori in Gulf Province, on the southern coast of Papua New Guinea. The strip lies just south of the town, at about 12 metres above sea level. Its ICAO code is AYKK.

The field is believed to date from the Second World War and then fell out of use. War-surplus Catalina flying boats served Kikori until about 1965. Work to upgrade the strip began around that time, and a tar-sealed runway opened about 1967. Kikori is among the wettest places in the country, with rainfall at the strip measured at roughly 360 inches a year in the late 1960s. By 1999 the bitumen had largely eroded and the surface had been covered with Marsden matting.

The airport has a single runway, 12/30, about 700 metres long. Local airlines and charter operators use it, and a landing permit is required. Pacific Helicopters has also been recorded landing here.
