Wellington International Airport guide

Updated 2026-10-06

Wellington Airport sits on the narrow Rongotai isthmus, about 5.5 km south-east of the city centre. The site began as Rongotai Aerodrome in 1929. A major reconstruction between 1953 and 1959 removed Rongotai Hill and reclaimed land from Evans Bay and Lyall Bay to build the current north-south runway, which reopened on 25 October 1959.
