Koumac Airport guide

Koumac Airport serves the town of Koumac in the Province Nord of New Caledonia, on the north-west coast of the main island, Grande Terre. Its ICAO code is NWWK. The airfield sits at 13 metres above sea level, about 3 kilometres from the town centre.

A single asphalt runway, 06/24, measures 1,102 metres. That length suits small turboprop aircraft, and the airfield carries both visual and instrument traffic. The Province Nord runs the aerodrome through its Direction de l'aménagement et du foncier. There is no customs, health service or fuel supply on site, and the administration keeps office hours only.

Koumac is a regional airfield rather than a major gateway. Scheduled flights link it with Nouméa-Magenta, the domestic airport in the capital, and with the Belep Islands off the northern tip of Grande Terre. Travellers should confirm the current timetable and operator with the airline before booking, because the carrier on the northern network has changed over the years.

The airstrip dates to the Second World War. The 810th Engineer Aviation Battalion of the United States Army enlarged it to take B-17 bombers, which flew raids against targets in the Solomon Islands from the field.
