Mar de Cortés International Airport Guide
Mar de Cortés International Airport (ICAO MMPE) serves Puerto Peñasco, a resort town on the northern Gulf of California in Sonora. It sits at La Jolla de Cortés, 27 metres above sea level on a 500-hectare site, and lies roughly 60 miles from the US border. Grupo Vidanta built it as the first fully privately funded airport in Mexico. It replaced an older airfield that had operated since the 1940s.
The airport has one concrete runway, 18/36, about 2,560 metres long and 60 metres wide. The single-storey terminal handles domestic arrivals and departures. It has check-in, a security checkpoint and an arrivals hall with baggage claim, car rental and taxi stands. The departures concourse has two gates with direct apron access. The commercial apron has three positions for narrow-body aircraft, plus general aviation stands. It is a Mexican airport of entry.
Traffic is very light. The airport handled 4,398 passengers in 2025 and 2,023 aircraft operations, and its peak was 5,632 passengers in 2013. Past scheduled services have included Aeroméxico, TAR Aerolíneas, Aéreo Servicio Guerrero and Calafia Airlines, but no airline is listed today. Most visitors arrive on private or charter flights, or drive across the border.
