Minamidaito Airport Guide
Minamidaito Airport (ICAO ROMD) lies on the east side of Minamidaito Island, a remote island in Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture. The island sits about 360 km east of Okinawa Island, and no other inhabited land lies within 400 km except neighbouring Kitadaito.
The site began as an Imperial Japanese Navy air base in 1934. Civilian flights started in the 1960s, the runway was lengthened in 1968 to take YS-11 aircraft, and the airport moved to its current site in 1997. Okinawa Prefecture runs it as a third-class airport with one 1,500 m asphalt runway, designated 02/20.
Ryukyu Air Commuter provides the only scheduled service, a flight to Naha that takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. The Kitadaito link, once among the shortest scheduled routes in Japan, was suspended at the end of July 2024, so reaching Kitadaito now means going through Naha. The island has no port, so the airport is a main link for people and supplies. In 2015 it handled 42,444 passengers, 1,584 aircraft movements and 224 tonnes of cargo.
