Abadan Ayatollah Jami International Airport guide

Abadan Ayatollah Jami International Airport (ICAO: OIAA) lies about 12 km from the city of Abadan in Khuzestan province, near the Iraqi border at the head of the Persian Gulf. It sits at an elevation of 7 feet.

The airfield became a major logistics centre for Lend-Lease aircraft during World War II. From May 1942 the U.S. Army Air Forces and the Douglas Aircraft Company assembled and flight-tested aircraft here before they were flown to Mehrabad Airport in Tehran for delivery to the Soviet Union. In 1977 the airport was upgraded to international status, with Iran Air flying to Kuwait City and, until December 1978, to London Heathrow via Athens.

Today the airport handles mainly domestic scheduled flights, most of them to Tehran Mehrabad and Mashhad, with further links to Isfahan, Shiraz and Kish. The two asphalt runways are 3,101 m and 2,265 m long, so the airfield can take large aircraft. In 2017 it recorded 6,425 aircraft movements and 5,669 tonnes of cargo.
