Kualanamu International Airport guide

Kualanamu International Airport opened for commercial service in July 2013, replacing the smaller Polonia International Airport that had operated within Medan's city limits. Owned by InJourney Airports and operated by Angkasa Pura Aviasi, the airport runs on a single runway measuring 3,750 metres, long enough to handle wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A380. A dedicated rail link connects the terminal to downtown Medan, making Kualanamu the first airport in Indonesia with direct train access to the city it serves.

A single terminal building handles both domestic and international traffic through eight gates, hosting carriers based in Medan such as Wings Air, Super Air Jet, Citilink and Indonesia AirAsia. International service links Kualanamu to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok and Jeddah, the last carrying pilgrims travelling for Hajj and Umrah. Toll roads extend from the airport to Binjai and Tebing Tinggi, widening its reach across North Sumatra beyond Medan itself. Annual traffic has settled around seven million passengers, down slightly from a 2023 peak.
