Tanjung Harapan Airport Guide
Tanjung Harapan Airport serves Tanjung Selor, the capital of North Kalimantan province and of Bulungan Regency, on the island of Borneo. It sits inside the town, about 300 metres from the North Kalimantan Governor's Office, at an elevation of 3 metres. Its role grew after North Kalimantan became a separate province in 2012, though it remains a small domestic field.
Operations began in 1978 under the Bulungan Regency government, on a 750 metre runway built for small aircraft. Juwata Airport in Tarakan managed the field from 1984 to 1992, after which it gained its own management and a 900 metre runway. A 2015 extension from 1,200 to 1,600 metres allowed ATR 72 turboprops to land. The single asphalt runway, 03/21, is 1,600 by 30 metres, with two taxiways and an apron of 155 by 65 metres. A longer runway of 1,850 metres is planned, and a larger terminal across the runway is proposed.
Wings Air flies to Balikpapan, and Susi Air serves the interior airstrips of Long Apung and Long Bawan. Traffic has swung widely, from 54,665 passengers in 2018 to 8,264 in 2024, when the airport handled 29.49 tonnes of cargo. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation runs the airport for the Government of Indonesia.
