Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Guide
Soekarno–Hatta International Airport opened for domestic service on 1 May 1985 and is Indonesia's busiest airport, serving as the main gateway to Jakarta. InJourney Airports, the state-owned operator formed from the merger of the country's two airport operators, runs the site under government ownership.
Architect Paul Andreu designed the original terminal buildings, drawing on Javanese pendopo and joglo roof forms set among landscaped courtyards; the design won the 1995 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. A free automated people mover, the Skytrain, links the terminal buildings and the on-site railway station. In 2023 the airport handled 49.08 million passengers and 348,088 aircraft movements, ranking third in Southeast Asia behind Singapore Changi and Suvarnabhumi.
A third runway entered commercial service in August 2019, lifting hourly movement capacity beyond the original two parallel runways. Garuda Indonesia anchors long-haul international routes, while domestic low-cost carriers and Hajj and Umrah charter operators are split across separate terminal buildings on the airport's grounds.
