Maniitsoq Airport guide

Maniitsoq Airport (ICAO BGMQ) is known in Greenlandic as Mittarfik Maniitsoq. It sits on Maniitsoq Island in Qeqqata municipality, central-western Greenland, about 1 km northwest of Maniitsoq town. Mittarfeqarfiit, the Greenland Airport Authority, operates it.

The airport opened on 2 October 1999 and replaced a heliport in the town. Construction began in 1996 and was difficult because of the mountainous terrain. It has one asphalt runway, 16/34, measuring 799 m, at 28 m above sea level. That length suits short take-off and landing turboprops. The airport has no de-icing equipment, which complicates winter operations. Danish aviation records show 8,829 passengers in 2012.

No roads link Greenland's towns, so air and sea are the only ways in and out of Maniitsoq. Air Greenland flies the domestic services, with connections to Nuuk and Ilulissat. Passengers travelling from Copenhagen change to a domestic turboprop in Nuuk.
