Sisimiut Airport guide

Sisimiut Airport (ICAO BGSS) is known in Greenlandic as Mittarfik Sisimiut. It stands on the northern shore of Kangerluarsunnguaq Bay in Qeqqata municipality, west Greenland, about 4 km northwest of Sisimiut town. Greenland Airports (Mittarfeqarfiit) operates it.

The airport opened on 3 October 1998 and replaced a heliport east of the town. Part of the site was built into the sea on landfill, at a cost of 210 million kroner. It has one asphalt runway, 13/31, measuring 799 m by 30 m, at 10 m above sea level. The length suits the short take-off and landing aircraft of Air Greenland's regional network. There is no de-icing equipment. Wikipedia records 22,955 passengers in 2012.

No roads link Greenland's towns, so air and sea are the main ways in and out of Sisimiut, the country's second-largest town. Air Greenland is the only airline. It flies to Nuuk, Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat, and international travellers connect on those routes. The terminal is small. It has Wi-Fi, parking and a kids' area.
