Sanday Airport Guide

Sanday Airport is a small airfield near the centre of Sanday, one of the North Isles of Orkney. It lies south and east of the B9068 road, about 37 km north-northeast of Kirkwall. It has no passenger services beyond the lifeline air link to Kirkwall.

Orkney Islands Council owns and maintains the airfield and holds its CAA Ordinary Licence. It is in uncontrolled airspace and is not licensed for night use. The main runway, 02/20, is about 527 m of graded hardcore. Two grass runways, 10/28 at 410 m and 16/34 at 349 m, lie alongside it.

Loganair flies the scheduled service under a Public Service Obligation contract with the council, which runs from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2029. Flights go to Kirkwall, with onward links on the inter-isles network to Stronsay and North Ronaldsay. The council reports Sanday among its busiest inter-island airfields for passengers. Bookable seats on the Islander aircraft fell from eight to seven because of CAA weight restrictions.

Private pilots need prior permission and an indemnity before landing, and must park on the GA apron. No aircraft may land or take off within 15 minutes of a scheduled Islander flight.
