Lerwick / Tingwall Airport Guide
Tingwall Airport sits in the Tingwall valley on Shetland Mainland, near Gott. It is the base for the inter-island air services that link Lerwick's island to the outer isles of Fair Isle and Foula. It has no scheduled flights to the Scottish mainland. Those leave from Sumburgh Airport in the south of the island.
The airport opened in 1976 and has a single asphalt runway, 02/20, about 810 metres long. Shetland Islands Council owns it and holds the CAA licence. The council contracts Airtask Group to fly the inter-island routes, and Airtask handles bookings. Wikipedia records 2,768 passengers and 702 aircraft movements for 2022. The runway was resurfaced in 2025, and flights moved temporarily to Sumburgh while the work was done.
There is no regular bus service to the airport. A Dial-A-Ride taxi link connects it with the Viking Bus Station in Lerwick and must be booked by 4pm the day before travel. The area around the airport is a Flight Restriction Zone, so drone operators need to check the NATS drone map before flying.
