Foula Airfield guide

Foula Airfield is a gravel airstrip on Foula, a remote island about 32 km west of Walls on Mainland Shetland. The island has no road link to the rest of Shetland, and the airstrip is one of two ways on and off it. The other is the ferry.

A single runway, 18/36, serves the strip. A scheduled service flies to Tingwall Airport near Lerwick in about 15 minutes, using a Britten-Norman Islander. There are 13 flights a week in summer and 7 in winter. Shetland Islands Council funds the service as a public service obligation, and its air services contract for 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2028 is run by Airtask. Fog and crosswinds often disrupt flights.

The Foula Airstrip Trust, a Scottish charity, owns the strip. The airfield also provides the island's only public toilet and telephone. A fire station on site covers the strip, and insurance concerns over fire cover briefly suspended flights in 2014. The runway has since been extended.
