Benbecula Airport Guide
Benbecula Airport sits beside Balivanich on the island of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides, joining the Uist islands to the mainland. The islands of Benbecula, North Uist and South Uist are linked by causeways, and the airport is the main air connection for all three. Sea crossings to the mainland take more than two hours.
The airfield dates from 1936, when Scottish Airways began flying to Balivanich. It became RAF Benbecula in 1941-42, a Coastal Command base that flew Atlantic patrols against U-boats and hosted Polish, Australian and Royal Navy units. After the war it became the control centre for the Hebrides Rocket Range.
Loganair flies to Glasgow, and Hebridean Air Services flies to Stornoway. Loganair also operates cargo flights to Inverness and Stornoway. The airport handles air ambulance flights and flights supporting the nearby missile test range. It handled 26,251 passengers and 2,075 aircraft movements in 2025.
