Capital International Airport guide

Capital International Airport (ICAO: HECP) serves Egypt's New Administrative Capital, the planned government district in the desert east of Cairo. The airport opened on 9 July 2019 for a one-month trial. The president inaugurated it on 29 June 2020. Hassan Allam Holding was the main contractor.

The main building covers about 5,000 square metres, and the airport lists a design capacity of 1 million passengers a year, with room to expand. The terminal handles about 300 passengers an hour. Eight aircraft stands sit on the apron. Two parallel asphalt runways, 01L/19R and 01R/19L, each measure 3,650 metres. That length suits wide-body aircraft, although current traffic is light.

Scheduled service is thin. Air Cairo began flights to Jeddah with an Airbus A320, and Smartwings has run seasonal charters to Bratislava and Prague. The airport also handles private jets, air taxi flights and traffic for petroleum companies. The Egyptian Armed Forces own the site, and the Egyptian Airports Company runs it. The government presents the airport as a way to ease pressure on the congested Cairo International Airport. Travellers should confirm flight schedules with the airline before they travel, because the route list changes often.
