Baltrum Airport Guide
Baltrum Airport (ICAO EDWZ) is a Sonderlandeplatz, a special-use airfield, on the southern edge of Baltrum, the smallest of the inhabited East Frisian Islands in the North Sea. The island is car-free, and the airfield gives visitors an alternative to the ferry from Nessmersiel, which takes about 30 minutes and depends on the tide.
The island municipality received approval to operate the field in 1972, and it began as a grass strip. Baltrum Flug was founded in 1976 and became the operator through a lease with the municipality in 1978. A paved runway opened in 2002. It measures 360 m by 15 m and is built from concrete paving stones, which makes it one of the shortest runways in Germany.
The length limits traffic to single-engine aircraft up to 1,400 kg, helicopters up to 5,700 kg, motor gliders and ultralights. Monthly movement caps apply: 500 in June and 800 in July and August. Pilots need prior permission before landing. There is no regular scheduled service. Baltrum Flug acts as a flight booking agent for the Inselflieger group, and flights, sightseeing trips and charters are arranged on request. The shortest hop to a neighbouring island, Norderney, takes about four minutes with a westerly wind.
