Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt (HAM) sits 8.5 km north of Hamburg city centre in the Fuhlsbüttel district. First opened in January 1911 as an airship facility, it is the world's oldest international airport still in commercial operation. The airport was renamed in November 2016 to honour former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, who lived nearby.

In 2024, the airport handled approximately 14.8 million passengers across around 127,000 aircraft movements, recovering to 86% of pre-pandemic 2019 levels. Around 55 airlines serve roughly 120 direct destinations. Eurowings operates HAM as a hub, while Condor uses it as a focus city.

The airport is owned by Flughafen Hamburg GmbH, a joint venture between the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (51%) and AviAlliance GmbH (49%). It covers 570 hectares with two intersecting runways, accommodating up to 55 aircraft simultaneously at the main apron.
