Mannheim City Airport sits in the Neuostheim district, about 3.5 km east of Mannheim city centre. It is a small airfield in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, used mainly for general aviation, flight training, business flights and ballooning. The first commercial airfield in Mannheim was founded in 1925, and flying moved to the present Neuostheim site in 1926.

Scheduled passenger service is limited. Mannheim City Air operates seasonal flights from the airfield to Sylt, and a small number of other leisure routes appear in the summer season. Most of the roughly 4,500 yearly movements reported by local campaign groups are private, club and corporate flights rather than airline services.

The airport is run by Rhein-Neckar Flugplatz GmbH. The asphalt runway 09/27 is 1,066 m long, and a separate 700 m grass strip serves gliders and balloons. The terminal building dates from 1998 and holds two check-in counters, a security checkpoint and a baggage claim area, with the control tower on top.
