The airport serves Nueva Gerona, the capital of the Isla de la Juventud special municipality, an island off Cuba's southern coast. It sits at 24 m above sea level, a short drive south of the town. Its ICAO code is MUNG. The island has no road or rail link to the Cuban mainland, so the airport is one of its two main gateways alongside the ferry from Surgidero de Batabanó.

Two asphalt runways are listed. Runway 05/23 measures 2,500 m by 45 m. Runway 17/35 measures 1,623 m by 30 m. The terminal has a single level with separate waiting, departure and arrival halls. It was designed for about 140 passengers an hour in both directions and has been remodelled twice, once to improve passenger flow and once for security.

The operator is ECASA, Cuba's airport and aeronautical services company. Scheduled traffic is domestic, mainly flights to and from Havana on Cubana de Aviación and Aerogaviota. Schedules have changed often, and Cubana cancelled and later resumed the Havana route in 2023, so check current times with the airline before travel.
