Karamay Airport guide

Karamay Guhai Airport serves Karamay, an oil-producing city in northern Xinjiang. Its ICAO code is ZWKM, and the field sits at 334 metres above sea level. The airport lies about 17 kilometres south of the city centre. The Civil Aviation Administration of China approved the current name in November 2021.

The present airport opened on 10 April 2006 with a China Southern Airlines flight to Urumqi. It replaced an earlier Karamay airfield built in 1958 and closed in 1988. A single asphalt and concrete runway, 13/31, is 2,600 metres long. A new terminal building opened on 8 September 2023, with seven check-in counters and 400 waiting seats. It is designed for two million passengers a year.

All flights are domestic. Routes link Karamay with Urumqi and with Xinjiang towns such as Yining, Kashgar, Korla, Kuqa and Altay. Longer services reach Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi'an and Hangzhou. The airport handled 722,187 passengers in 2025. A first-phase expansion began in February 2025 and plans a 3,200-metre runway and 22 aircraft stands.
