Harbin Taiping International Airport guide

Harbin Taiping International Airport opened for trial operations on April 1, 1979, as Yanjiagang Airport, replacing the older Majiagou Airfield that Japanese forces had built in 1931. It gained international status in 1984, when it began handling flights to Russia. Heilongjiang Province Airport Management Group Co., Ltd. now owns and operates the facility, which sits southwest of Harbin, the provincial capital of Heilongjiang in China's northeast, close to the Russian border.

A major 1994-1997 expansion, costing 960 million yuan, rebuilt the original terminal and set the airport up for the passenger growth that followed: traffic passed 10 million in 2013, 18 million by 2017, and roughly 24.7 million in 2025. A second runway, a 3,600-metre concrete strip parallel to the original 3,200-metre runway, opened on January 23, 2025, to handle that growth.

The airport's location makes it a gateway for routes into Russia's Far East and Siberia, with services to Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Yakutsk and Yekaterinburg alongside links to Seoul, Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur. Harbin's severe winters, with temperatures regularly falling below -20 Celsius, shape year-round de-icing and snow-clearance operations at the airport.
