The site began as an air base. Conversion to a dual-use military and public airport started in May 2010, and the airport opened to commercial flights on 16 June 2013. It has one concrete runway, designated 12/30, which is 2,500 metres long and 45 metres wide.

Scheduled flights are domestic. Carriers include China Express Airlines, Hebei Airlines and Spring Airlines, with routes to Shijiazhuang, Hangzhou and Shanghai Hongqiao. In 2021 the airport handled about 464,600 passengers, 4,617 aircraft movements and 39.4 tonnes of cargo. Zhangjiakou co-hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics, and the airport gives travellers an air link to the region's ski resorts and to the Great Wall sites nearby.
