Goose Bay Airport guide

Goose Bay Airport sits about 6 km west of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, the main service centre of Labrador. The site was chosen in July 1941 by the Dominion Geodetic Survey, and the first aircraft landed in December 1941. It began as a wartime staging base for aircraft flying to the United Kingdom.

The airfield is shared with 5 Wing Goose Bay of the Royal Canadian Air Force, which owns the land and runs the military side. The Goose Bay Airport Corporation, a non-profit, manages the civil area. Two long runways, 3,369 m and 2,921 m, make the field a frequent diversion and fuel stop for transatlantic airliners. Around 160,000 passengers a year pass through the civilian terminal. The airport is staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency and is open around the clock as an airport of entry.

Scheduled flying is mostly regional. PAL Airlines links Goose Bay with St. John's, Deer Lake, Gander and Wabush, while Air Canada Express flies to Halifax. Air Borealis serves the coastal Labrador communities. Air Borealis also operates floatplanes from the nearby Otter Creek Seaplane Base from June to September.
