Nain Airport Guide

Nain Airport (ICAO CYDP) is a small gravel airstrip on the shore of Unity Bay, beside the community of Nain on the northern Labrador coast. Nain is the administrative capital of Nunatsiavut, the Inuit self-governing region, and had 1,204 residents at the 2021 census. No road reaches the community, so the airstrip is its main year-round link to the rest of the province. From mid-June to mid-November a weekly provincial ferry from Goose Bay also calls.

The single runway, 04/22, is gravel and measures 1,986 feet (605 m). The field sits 21 feet above sea level. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador operates it. The short strip limits the airport to small turboprop aircraft.

Air Borealis, a PAL Airlines subsidiary, flies direct to Goose Bay and Natuashish. Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville and Rigolet are reached through Natuashish. Studies in 2018 and 2020 found that the current site cannot be upgraded for 24-hour operations or larger aircraft. A 2020 pre-feasibility study identified a possible new site about 7 km southwest of Nain, and the Nunatsiavut Government is seeking funding for a full feasibility study.
