Churchill Airport guide

Churchill Airport serves the town of Churchill on the western shore of Hudson Bay in northern Manitoba. It lies about 5.6 km (3.5 mi) east-southeast of the town, at an elevation of 29 m (96 ft). Its ICAO identifier is CYYQ.

The site began as part of the Fort Churchill military installation, built by the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War. Transport Canada is listed as the operator. The airfield has two runways. Runway 15/33 is asphalt and measures 2,803 m (9,195 ft), long enough for large jets. Runway 07/25 is gravel and measures 1,219 m (4,000 ft).

Calm Air links Churchill with Winnipeg. The airport also acts as a transfer point for passengers and cargo moving between Winnipeg and remote communities in Nunavut's Kivalliq Region. Its long runway makes it a diversion airport for large jets, up to the size of a Boeing 747 or 777, that need to make emergency landings. Wikipedia records 10,329 aircraft movements for 2010 and publishes no passenger count. Confirm the current schedule with the airline before travelling.
