Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport sits 9 kilometres west of downtown Winnipeg in the heart of the Canadian Prairies. The airport opened in 1928 as Stevenson Aerodrome and was renamed in 2011 to honour James Armstrong Richardson, a pioneer of Canadian commercial aviation. The main terminal, designed by architect Cesar Pelli and engineering firm Stantec, opened in October 2011 and was the first airport terminal in Canada to earn LEED certification.
The airport handled 4.3 million passengers in 2024, ranking seventh among Canadian airports by passenger traffic. It operates two asphalt runways and serves 47 non-stop destinations across domestic, transborder, and international routes. WestJet and Air Canada are the dominant carriers, with WestJet operating around 158 departures per week. The airport also serves as a hub for Calm Air, Perimeter Airlines, and cargo carrier Cargojet, and as an operating base for Flair Airlines.
U.S. border preclearance facilities are available on-site, allowing travellers to clear U.S. customs before departure. Perimeter Aviation operates a separate terminal building 2.6 kilometres south of the main terminal, serving remote northern communities across Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.
