The airport sits at Laguna del Sauce, on Route 93 in Maldonado Department, and is the main gateway for Punta del Este and the surrounding resort coast. It is the second busiest air terminal in Uruguay after Carrasco in Montevideo. It is also known as Laguna del Sauce International Airport and Punta del Este International Airport, and its ICAO code is SULS.

Traffic is strongly seasonal. Most scheduled flights run in the southern summer, from December to March, when services link the airport with Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Porto Alegre and Asunción. A smaller set of routes operates through the rest of the year. Private and business aircraft also use the field heavily during the holiday season.

The airport has two asphalt runways: 01/19 at 1,606 m and 08/26 at 2,130 m. The terminal building was designed by architect Carlos Ott and opened in 1997. Corporación América Airports holds the concession, which the government extended to 2033 with a commitment of more than US$35 million for new infrastructure, including a private aviation terminal and a VIP lounge.
