Bellingham International Airport sits on 2,190 acres northwest of the city, in Whatcom County, Washington. The first runway was dedicated in 1940, and the field was taken over by the military after Pearl Harbor and used through World War II. Whatcom County sold it to the Port of Bellingham in 1957 for one dollar.

The airport has one active runway, 16/34, which is 6,701 feet long. Two older runways have closed. Passenger numbers peaked at about 1.16 million in 2013 and stood near 529,000 in 2024, with roughly 60,000 aircraft movements.

Bellingham draws many travellers from British Columbia, who use it as a lower-fare alternative to Vancouver International Airport. An estimated 65 percent of customers come from Canada. Allegiant Air carries most of the traffic with nonstop flights to leisure destinations in the western United States, and Alaska Airlines connects the airport with Seattle and Portland. San Juan Airlines flies to the San Juan Islands. A two-phase expansion finished in 2014 raised the terminal to about 104,000 square feet and the gate count from two to five.
