Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport sits in South Burlington, about 6 km east of downtown Burlington, on 942 acres at an elevation of 335 feet. It is the busiest airport in Vermont. The first aircraft landed on the field in 1920, and the airport was formally dedicated in 1921. The Vermont Air National Guard flies from the same field.
The City of Burlington owns the airport and the Burlington Airport Commission runs it. It handled 1,431,834 passengers in 2025 and about 83,000 aircraft operations. Two runways are active: 15/33 at 8,319 by 150 feet and the shorter 1/19 at 4,112 by 75 feet. FedEx Express and UPS operate cargo flights alongside the passenger service.
American, Delta, United, Breeze Airways and Sun Country serve BTV, mostly through connecting flights to East Coast and Midwest hubs. The terminal has recently been expanded under Project NexT. Travelers from northern Vermont and the Lake Champlain region use BTV, and it is also a gateway for visitors heading to nearby ski areas.
