Richmond International Airport Guide
Richmond International Airport sits 11 km southeast of downtown Richmond in Sandston, Henrico County. It opened in 1927 as Richard Evelyn Byrd Flying Field — one of the oldest continuously operating commercial airports in the United States. The airport is a joint civil-military facility, sharing the field with Virginia Army National Guard aviation operations.
A $300 million renovation completed in 2007 replaced the original single-story building with a two-level terminal. A further expansion from 2018 to 2021 added gates, bringing the total to 28. In 2025, RIC set consecutive passenger and cargo records, handling nearly 4.9 million passengers and 223 million pounds of cargo.
The airport serves primarily domestic routes to cities in the Northeast, South, and Midwest, with seasonal international service to Bermuda, Canada, and Mexico. It ranks as the third-busiest airport in Virginia after Washington Reagan National and Washington Dulles.
