George Bush Intercontinental Airport sits 37 km north of downtown Houston, between Interstates 45 and 69. It opened in 1969 as Houston Intercontinental Airport and was renamed in 1997 to honor the 41st U.S. president. The airport covers roughly 112 square kilometres, making it one of the largest airport properties in the United States.

United Airlines operates its second-largest hub here, accounting for over 450 of the 650+ daily departures. The airport was the first in North America to offer nonstop flights to every inhabited continent. A Skyway automated people mover connects all five terminals airside, while the Subway system provides landside connections and links to the on-site Marriott hotel.

With 48.4 million passengers in 2024, IAH ranked 15th busiest in the United States. A $1.3 billion terminal redevelopment program begun in 2020 is upgrading Terminal B through 2026 and expanding capacity across the airport.
