George Bush Intercontinental Airport Guide
George Bush Intercontinental Airport sits about 37 km (23 miles) north of downtown Houston, between Interstate 45 and Interstate 69/US 59, with direct access to the Hardy Toll Road. It opened on June 8, 1969 as Houston Intercontinental Airport and was renamed in 1997 to honor the 41st U.S. president. The airport property covers about 40 square kilometres (10,000 acres) and has five runways.
United Airlines operates a major hub here. Five terminals, A to E, are linked airside by the Skyway automated people mover, while the Subway provides landside connections between the terminals and the Houston Airport Marriott.
Terminal A serves non-United domestic carriers, Terminal B United Express, Terminal C United domestic flights, Terminal D most non-United international flights, and Terminal E United international flights and all international arrivals. IAH handled 48.4 million passengers in 2024. The $1.3 billion terminal redevelopment program includes the Terminal B Transformation, whose northern expansion is scheduled to open in fall 2026.
