Valley International Airport Guide
Valley International Airport sits about 3 miles northeast of Harlingen in Cameron County, in the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas. The City of Harlingen owns it, and a nine-member airport board appointed by the mayor runs it. The site is the former Harlingen Air Force Base, which closed in 1962 and was converted to civil use as Harlingen Industrial Airport. It later became Harlingen Regional Airport and then Valley International Airport.
Three asphalt runways serve the field. The longest, 18R/36L, measures 9,400 feet. About half of the flight operations are military training flights. Cargo carriers DHL Aviation and FedEx Express also fly here.
The airport handled about 977,000 passengers and 39,785 aircraft operations in 2025. Southwest Airlines began serving Harlingen in 1975. The terminal has seven gates. Nonstop flights go to Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Dallas Love Field, Houston Hobby, Houston Intercontinental and Minneapolis/St. Paul, with seasonal service to Cancún. Chicago O'Hare service is scheduled to start on December 19, 2026.
