Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport Guide

Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport sits about six miles east of downtown Amarillo, in Potter County in the Texas Panhandle. The field stands at 3,607 feet above sea level. The Amarillo Airport Department runs it for the city, and its address is 10801 Airport Boulevard.

The airport's main runway, 4/22, is 13,502 feet long, one of the longest civilian runways in the United States. The second runway, 13/31, is 7,901 feet long. The length suits heavy military and cargo aircraft as well as airline jets, and the field also handles general aviation traffic.

The present airport grew from the municipal field that opened in 1929. New terminal buildings followed in 1954 and 1971, and a $52.2 million renovation finished in 2011. Today one terminal serves airline passengers, with check-in counters, TSA screening and rental car facilities under one roof.

American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines provide the scheduled service, with American and United flying regional jets under the American Eagle and United Express names. The airport recorded about 802,000 passengers and 39,781 aircraft operations in 2024. The field was named for Rick Husband, an Amarillo native who commanded the space shuttle Columbia on its final mission.
