Pittsburgh International Airport Guide
Last updated 2026-04-21 UTC
Pittsburgh International Airport sits 15 km west of downtown Pittsburgh in Findlay and Moon townships, Allegheny County. Covering 10,000 acres, it is the largest civil public airport by land area in Pennsylvania. The airport opened in 1952 and was extensively rebuilt in 1992 as a hub for US Airways before that carrier reduced operations. A $1.7 billion terminal replacement opened in November 2025, replacing the 1992 structure with a modern three-level landside building connected via a covered skybridge to the existing airside terminal.
The airside terminal is shaped like an X with four concourses and 61 gates. International operations focus on Concourse C, with British Airways, Icelandair, and Aer Lingus providing nonstop transatlantic service. The airport reached 9.95 million passengers in 2024, its highest total since 2006, with Southwest and American as the two largest carriers. No single airline holds more than 30 percent market share.
PIT operates four runways — three parallel east-west runways and one crosswind runway — supporting 134,430 aircraft operations annually. The airport became the first in the world to operate on its own microgrid in 2021, powered by natural gas and solar.
