Philadelphia International Airport sits on the Delaware River in southwest Philadelphia, on land that once held the Hog Island shipyard. It opened for commercial service on June 20, 1940, and is owned and operated by the City of Philadelphia's Department of Aviation.
PHL is the busiest airport in Pennsylvania and the 21st-busiest in the United States, handling roughly 30.1 million passengers in 2025. American Airlines operates one of its hubs from the airport, supporting close to 500 daily departures among 15 airlines flying to more than 130 destinations. Frontier Airlines bases aircraft here, and UPS Airlines operates a major cargo hub, helping push freight and airmail volume past 482,000 tons in 2025.
SEPTA's Airport Line runs directly beneath the terminals, giving Center City Philadelphia a rail link roughly every half hour. The airport has four active runways, the longest being 9R/27L at 12,000 feet — the longest civil runway in Pennsylvania.
