Harrisburg International Airport sits in Lower Swatara Township, about 14 km (9 miles) southeast of downtown Harrisburg, on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. It is the main commercial airport for south-central Pennsylvania, and its catchment takes in Dauphin, Cumberland, York and Lebanon counties.

The site began as a military field. It served as the Middletown Air Depot in World War II and then as Olmsted Air Force Base. The base closed in 1969 and commercial service started under Commonwealth of Pennsylvania ownership. The Commonwealth handed the airport to the Susquehanna Area Regional Airport Authority in 1998. The same authority also runs Franklin County Regional Airport in Chambersburg and Gettysburg Regional Airport.

A single terminal has 12 gates in a pier layout. A four-story Multi-Modal Transportation Facility with 2,504 parking spaces connects to it by sky bridge. One runway, 13/31, is 10,001 ft long. Allegiant, American, Delta and United fly from the airport, with American Eagle, Delta Connection and United Express handling regional routes. The Middletown Amtrak station lies a few kilometres from the terminal.
