Asheville Regional Airport Guide
Asheville Regional Airport sits near Fletcher in Henderson County, about 9 miles south of downtown Asheville. It lies on a plateau at 2,164 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains, close to Interstate 26 and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The terminal opened on June 7, 1961; the airport began as the Asheville and Hendersonville Airport. The Asheville Regional Airport Authority took over operations from the City of Asheville in 1980. In 2012 North Carolina legislation created the current Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority. A single 8,002-foot runway, 17/35, handles all traffic.
The airport handled 2,240,877 passengers in 2025, its second-busiest year after 2023, despite the effects of Hurricane Helene in September 2024. Allegiant, Sun Country, Delta, American and United fly nonstop to 26 destinations.
A $400 million terminal program called AVL Forward is replacing the original seven-gate terminal with a new two-story terminal of 12 gates across two concourses. The North Concourse and a new TSA checkpoint opened in June 2025, and the project is expected to finish by the end of 2027.
