Golden Triangle Regional Airport Guide
Golden Triangle Regional Airport sits at 2080 Airport Road in Lowndes County, Mississippi, roughly midway between Columbus, Starkville and West Point. Local leaders from those cities and from Lowndes and Oktibbeha counties proposed a shared commercial airport in the mid-1960s. Ground broke in 1969, the name was chosen in 1970, and Southern Airways flew the first scheduled service in 1972.
The airport has one runway, 18/36, which measures about 8,000 by 150 feet after a 2011 extension from 6,497 feet. It handles aircraft up to a Boeing 757. A contract air traffic control tower opened in 2003. Military flying makes up most of the roughly 51,000 annual operations, and general aviation and air taxi traffic account for the rest.
Airline service is regional. Delta Connection flies to Atlanta, operated by Endeavor Air with CRJ900 jets, and American Eagle flies to Dallas/Fort Worth. Delta has served the field since 2000. Airbus Helicopters, then American Eurocopter, became the first major industry to locate at the airport in 2003 and still builds helicopters on the site.
