Bangor International Airport sits on the west side of the city of Bangor, in central Maine. The City of Bangor owns it. The site began as Godfrey Field, on land owned by attorney Edward Rawson Godfrey, and Boston-Maine Airways started passenger flights to Portland and Boston in 1931. The U.S. military took the field over before World War II and ran it as Dow Air Force Base until 1968. The city bought the base and reopened it as an international airport in 1969.

The single runway, 15/33, is 11,440 feet long. Dow built it in 1958 to handle B-52 bombers, and it is among the longest runways in the eastern United States. That length has made Bangor a refueling and customs stop for transatlantic charter and military flights since the 1970s. The Maine Air National Guard's 101st Refueling Wing shares the field and flies KC-135 tankers.

Scheduled service is domestic. Allegiant, American, Breeze, Delta and United serve Bangor, some through regional partners. The airport reported about 860,000 passengers in 2025 and 41,642 aircraft operations. A Maine Troop Greeters museum on the terminal's second floor holds military memorabilia and donated challenge coins.
