Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Guide
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport opened in 1928 on farmland purchased by aviation pioneer J. Parker Van Zandt, who founded it as a base for Scenic Airways. The City of Phoenix bought the field from Acme Investment Company in 1935 for $100,000 and has operated it ever since. It is Arizona's busiest airport, sitting in Maricopa County just outside downtown Phoenix.
American Airlines operates one of its largest connecting hubs at Sky Harbor, while Southwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines both maintain operating bases here. In 2025 the airport handled 51.6 million passengers and 487,143 aircraft operations across three parallel runways, making it the 11th-busiest airport in the United States by passenger boardings and the 38th-busiest worldwide.
The PHX Sky Train, an automated people mover that opened in 2013 and was extended to the Rental Car Center in 2022, links the terminals to economy parking and to the Valley Metro light rail station at 44th Street and Washington. A former third terminal closed in 2020 and was demolished in 2021 as the airport consolidated passenger operations into Terminals 3 and 4.
