Chefornak Airport guide

Chefornak Airport serves the Yup'ik village of Chefornak on the south bank of the Kinia River in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, in southwest Alaska. The village had 506 residents at the 2020 census. The airfield sits about 1 mile south of the village at 54 feet above sea level. Its FAA identifier is CFK and its ICAO code is PACK.

The airport has one gravel runway, 16/34, measuring 3,230 by 60 feet, with medium-intensity edge lights that pilots switch on over the common traffic frequency, 122.7. FAA remarks warn that the surface is soft when wet, with dips of 6 to 8 inches along its length, and that it is unmaintained, so pilots are advised to inspect it before landing. Nobody is on site. The airfield was moved farther from the school, and the former strip is closed.

The State of Alaska owns the field through the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Central Region. No road connects Chefornak to Bethel or the rest of the state, so scheduled flights from Bethel carry passengers, mail and freight, and barges serve the river in summer. Commuter carriers including Grant Aviation and Yute Commuter Service fly from Bethel.
