Kisoro Airport Guide

Kisoro Airport (ICAO HUKI) is a small domestic airfield in the far southwest of Uganda, close to the borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It sits at about 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level in the Virunga highlands. The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority manages it as one of its upcountry airfields.

The single asphalt runway, 18/36, is about 1,200 m long and 30 m wide. Navigation aids are limited to a non-directional beacon and a windsock. The field has terminal services, fire and rescue cover and aviation police security. It has no fuel, customs, immigration or meteorological service, so it handles no international flights.

Traffic is mostly small aircraft carrying visitors to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Flights also connect on to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Aerolink Uganda flies the route from Entebbe, and the flight replaces a drive of most of a day from Kampala. The runway closed at the end of 2023 for rehabilitation and reopened after test flights on 31 May 2024. The authority has since studied a longer runway, but available land limits how far it can extend.
