Boryspil International Airport guide

Boryspil International Airport is Ukraine's largest airport, positioned in Kyiv Oblast near the town of Boryspil, on the country's main trunk route to the capital. Before the full-scale Russian invasion, it handled about two-thirds of Ukraine's passenger traffic and nearly all its intercontinental routes, alongside most of the country's international air cargo. A dedicated rail service, the Kyiv Boryspil Express, linked the terminals to the city centre in around thirty-five minutes.

The airport traces its origins to 1959, when the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR ordered a former military airfield near Boryspil opened for scheduled civil flights under the name Kyiv-Tsentralnyi. It now operates as a state-owned commercial enterprise under Ukraine's Ministry of Infrastructure. Two parallel concrete runways handle traffic; the longer, built in 2001, can take wide-body aircraft flying long-haul services.

Since 24 February 2022, Boryspil has not handled any scheduled, charter or cargo flights, after the Russian invasion closed Ukrainian airspace to civil aviation. In the years before the closure, Airports Council International ranked it among Europe's most efficient airports in its passenger-volume category.
