İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport opened in November 1987 and serves İzmir, Turkey's third-largest city and the main gateway to the Aegean coast. The airport sits 18 km southwest of the city center in the Gaziemir district and handled 11.5 million passengers in 2024, ranking fifth among Turkish airports.

The airport is operated by TAV Airports under a concession from the state aviation authority DHMİ. It has two parallel runways of 3,240 metres each, though operational constraints prevent simultaneous use. The international terminal opened in 2006 and the domestic terminal followed in 2014, together accommodating both charter-heavy summer traffic and year-round scheduled services.

SunExpress, which is co-owned by Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa, uses İzmir as a primary base and operates the highest volume of flights from the airport. İZBAN commuter rail connects the airport directly to central İzmir and Selçuk, running every 10 minutes at peak times. The airport also serves as the practical entry point for the Ephesus archaeological site and the resort towns of Kuşadası and Çeşme.
