Esenboğa International Airport Guide
Esenboğa International Airport serves Ankara, the capital of Turkey, from the Çubuk district northeast of the city. It opened in 1955 and is owned by the General Directorate of State Airports, with TAV Airports Holding running day-to-day operations.
The current terminal building opened in October 2006, replacing separate domestic and international facilities with a single combined structure. A general aviation terminal for private and business jets opened in January 2012. A few years later, Esenboğa became Turkey's first carbon-neutral airport, offsetting emissions data from 2013 through the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. Airports Council International has recognized the airport twice: as the top airport in Europe within the 5-10 million passenger category in 2009, and again in 2020 for airports handling 15 to 25 million passengers a year.
Passenger numbers have grown steadily since the pandemic downturn, with international traffic rising faster than domestic traffic in recent years. The airport also functions as a gateway to central Anatolia, connecting travelers to Cappadocia and other regional destinations well beyond driving range of Ankara itself.
