It sits in Pak Phun subdistrict, about 14 km from the city centre, and opened on 1 December 1998 with the first landing by Thai Airways International and PBair from Bangkok. Before that, the city relied on a temporary arrangement at the army's Cha-ian Airport from 1985, and earlier still on Short 360 flights from Surat Thani.
