Providenciales International Airport guide

Providenciales International Airport is the main air gateway to the Turks and Caicos Islands. It sits on the island of Providenciales, a short drive from the resort strip at Grace Bay. The Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority, set up in 2006, manages it alongside five other island airports.

The airport began as a hand-cleared airstrip in the 1960s. A coral-surfaced runway followed in the early 1970s, and a 1981 upgrade to FAA standards lengthened it to 8,000 feet. A 2011 extension brought it to about 9,200 feet (2,804 m), enough for wide-body aircraft such as the British Airways 777. A 10 million dollar terminal expansion finished in December 2014 and grew the building from 51,462 to 92,321 square feet.

The airport is officially named Howard Hamilton International Airport after a local airline founder, though most travellers still use the Providenciales name. Scheduled flights link the island with cities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the Caribbean. Customs and immigration run from 6 am to 8 pm.
