Juba International Airport Guide
Juba International Airport (JUB/HSSJ) serves Juba, the capital of South Sudan, located about 5 km northeast of the city's central business district on the western banks of the White Nile. The site's aviation history dates to 1929, with a formal runway constructed by Shell in 1931. A new passenger terminal, built with Chinese assistance, was inaugurated in October 2018, replacing the original facility abandoned during the 2013–2014 civil war.
The airport is South Sudan's only international gateway, handling commercial passenger, cargo, and charter flights alongside operations by the United Nations (UNMISS, UNHAS), the World Food Programme, and numerous NGOs. A single runway (13/31) measuring 3,100 metres serves the airport. Ten airlines operate scheduled services, with Ethiopian Airlines and Uganda Airlines providing the highest-frequency connections, primarily through Addis Ababa and Entebbe.
The airport is operated by the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA). Due to South Sudan's limited road network, Juba is geographically isolated — the nearest significant towns are many hours away by road. The airport plays a disproportionately large role in the country's connectivity, with air transport being the primary link to international destinations.
